Google is now showing AI Overviews on branded queries — searches for a company's own name. In testing published in October 2026, Chris Long found AI Overviews appearing for 93% of the brands tested, including Reddit, Salesforce, Amazon and Adobe. The consequence is direct: the first thing a customer reads about your company is no longer your website — it is Google's summary of you. And those summaries frequently carry errors: old prices, discontinued services, a previous address, or details merged with a similarly named company. Fixing it is a three-step job that needs no technical skill and takes about an hour: search your own name and read what it says, trace where each claim came from, then correct it at the source. Expect 4–6 weeks before corrections show up.
This article covers how to audit yourself, the six errors we see most often and where each originates, and the brand-misspelling leak almost every company overlooks.
Why This Is More Urgent Than an Ordinary Ranking Change
People searching your brand name are the most valuable traffic you have.
They are not comparing — they are confirming. Someone searching your company name has usually already heard of you: a referral, your content, a business card, or a mention inside an AI conversation. They are searching to confirm you are real, credible, and worth contacting.
A failure here costs far more than losing a few ranking positions. A ranking drop loses you some cold traffic. A wrong AI summary on your brand name loses customers who were already about to contact you — and you never see it happen.
And you do not directly control that text. Google assembles it from everything it reads about you: your website, your Google Business Profile, directory listings, news, social profiles, and third-party pages that mention you. Your own site is one input, not the only one.
Step 1: Search Yourself and Read It Properly
Do this now. Five minutes.
Search every one of these:
- Your full registered company name
- Your short name — what customers actually call you
- Company name + reviews
- Company name + price / cost / fees
- Company name + a specific service
- Common misspellings of your name — covered separately below, and the most overlooked
- Company name + a competitor's name — how buyers search when comparing
For each one, record four things:
- Whether an AI Overview appears
- What it says — read it word by word, do not skim
- What is wrong
- Which sources it cites
Then ask the same in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Perplexity: "What does [company] do?" Expect the answers to differ substantially — only about 11% of citations overlap between platforms, and citation sets change roughly 50% month to month.
Important: use an incognito window set to Singapore. Results while you are logged in are personalised and not what your customers see.
The Six Most Common Errors, and Where They Come From
Fixing this is a sourcing exercise. AI summaries do not invent things from nothing — they restate what they read, so an error can almost always be traced to a specific page.
1. Old prices
Source: an un-updated pricing page, an article from three years ago, or a stale directory entry.
Fix: update the site — and fix the old prices buried in old blog posts too. Most companies update the pricing page and forget the 2023 article still quoting the old figure.
2. Services you no longer offer
Source: old service pages, old PDFs, outdated descriptions on partner sites.
Fix: rewrite or remove. If the page has traffic, rewrite it rather than deleting — keep the page, change the content.
3. A previous address or disconnected phone number
Source: Google Business Profile, local directories, trade association listings, old press releases.
Fix: Google Business Profile first, then the directories one by one. This is the most urgent of the six — a customer who travels to the wrong address leaves a bad review and does not come back.
4. Merged with a similarly named company
Source: name similarity, with neither company publishing enough distinguishing detail.
Fix: put verifiable anchors on your site — full registered name, UEN, year founded, full address, group structure. These are what AI uses to tell entities apart. Singapore has a high density of similar company names, so this deserves attention here more than in most markets.
5. Wrong industry classification
Source: a homepage too vague to classify, so the model guesses.
Fix: say what you do, where, and for whom in the first paragraph of your homepage. "We provide innovative digital solutions" is no information at all.
6. Distorted size or background
Source: old job-board listings, funding news, third-party estimates.
Fix: publish verifiable facts on your About page — clients served, year founded, office address. Give specific numbers and specific numbers get quoted instead of estimates.
The Brand Misspelling Leak
Worth its own section, because the volume is usually larger than companies expect.
Customers misspell your name. English brand names get spelled phonetically, Chinese names get romanised inconsistently, similar letters get swapped. Added together these searches are often a meaningful number — and every one of those people is looking for you specifically, not shopping around.
How to check: open Google Search Console, go to the queries report, and look for terms that are clearly variants of your company name spelled wrong. Impressions with few clicks means people searching for you are not finding you.
How to fix it, three things:
- Add alternateName to your site's Organization structured data, listing the common variants. This is the standard way of telling search engines "these names are also me."
- Add a line on your About page — for example, "Mayson AI (sometimes written as Maizon AI or Miyon AI)." This gives AI an explicit, citable mapping.
- Do not change your Google Business Profile name to accommodate misspellings. Use your real registered name — stuffing variants into the business name violates Google's rules and risks suspension.
Step 2: Fix It at the Source
Work in order of how much weight each source carries.
Priority 1: Your own website
Make these specific:
- Homepage first paragraph — what you do, where, for whom, in one sentence
- About page — real team with names, roles and experience; full registered name and UEN; year founded; full address including unit number
- Pricing page — a price or a range. "Contact us for a quote" is no information, so you get skipped or an estimate gets used instead
- Service pages — one per service, stating what is included
The governing principle: AI quotes what is specific and skips what is vague. Research from Princeton and Georgia Tech found cited statistics can increase AI citation rates by up to 40%.
Priority 2: Google Business Profile
Free, and the single most important source for local business information. Keep address, phone, hours, services and website accurate — and set special hours in advance for public holidays and year-end.
Priority 3: Third-party mentions
- Google reviews — for brand evaluation queries, 57% of AI citations come from reviews and social proof
- LinkedIn — across 1.4 million citations from six AI platforms, LinkedIn was the most-cited domain for B2B
- Local directories and trade listings — must match your site
- Old press releases and partner pages — the most commonly forgotten source of wrong information
NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone) matters particularly here. "8 Temasek Blvd" in one place, "8 Temasek Boulevard" in another, "Unit 42-01" in a third — these can be read as different entities, diluting the signal.
Priority 4: Confirm AI can read you at all
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and check for these crawlers next to Disallow: GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended.
Sites built before 2023, or configured by a previous vendor with a blanket bot block, frequently refuse all of them. Blocked means absent from the dataset, not ranked lower — and no amount of good website copy helps while that is true. It is a five-minute check and the first thing worth doing.
Step 3: Make It a Monthly Check
Fixing it once is not finishing it. Citation sets change roughly 50% month to month, so this is ongoing, not a project.
30 minutes a month:
- Fixed date, the same seven brand queries
- Google, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity
- Four columns: does an AI summary appear, is it accurate, what did it cite, what changed since last month
That spreadsheet is a citation log. If a provider is doing GEO or AEO work for you and cannot produce one after 90 days, you are paying for traditional SEO with new vocabulary.
Two newer things worth knowing:
- Google Search Console began rolling out AI performance reporting from 3 June 2026 — impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates — though click data is not included at launch. You can see whether you appear, not how much it sent you.
- Gemini has added UTM parameters to its outgoing links, so referral traffic from Gemini can now be attributed in your analytics. Worth checking your source report for it — this is new.
- Microsoft Clarity's AI Visibility dashboard now lets you add, edit and remove the terms it treats as branded queries, including abbreviations, misspellings and translations — directly useful for the misspelling problem above.
How Long Corrections Take
Realistic expectations:
- Google Business Profile changes — days to about two weeks
- Website content changes — 2–6 weeks to enter the citation pool
- Stale third-party directory entries — depends on that site's update cycle; can be months
- An already-established wrong description — needs new information to accumulate over the old. Check again after 4–8 weeks, not the next day
Do not check daily. Make the fixes, then look again in four to six weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: AI is saying something wrong about my company. Can I report it to Google?
There is no "correct this AI summary" channel. The working route is fixing the source — your website, your Business Profile, directory listings — and waiting for a re-crawl. Check again 4–6 weeks later rather than the next day.
Q2: Why has AI confused us with another company?
Usually name similarity combined with neither site publishing enough distinguishing detail. Add your full registered name, UEN, year founded, full address and group structure to your site — those are the anchors used to separate entities. Singapore's high rate of similar company names makes this worth prioritising.
Q3: Will an AI Overview on my brand name reduce my clicks?
Somewhat — some people get what they needed from the summary. But branded search intent is strong and people who want to contact you still click. The real risk is not a few lost clicks; it is the summary being wrong and talking a ready customer out of contacting you.
Q4: Does a small company need to worry about this?
More, not less. Large brands have many sources that cross-correct each other. A small company has few, so one outdated directory entry can dominate how AI describes you. Small-company customers also rely more heavily on branded search to confirm you are real and still trading.
Q5: How often should I check?
Monthly, on a fixed date, with a fixed query list. Citation sets shift about 50% monthly, so a single check tells you little. Weekly is noise. Quarterly is too slow — a wrong summary spends those three months quietly turning customers away.
