You now measure AI visibility with three questions, not one: does AI mention your brand at all when asked about your category (share of mentions), does it recommend you as a genuine option rather than a passing reference (how you are positioned in the answer), and does the answer link to your site (citations). Traditional metrics — rankings, traffic, impressions — cannot answer any of these, because a customer who gets a recommendation inside an AI conversation may never appear in your analytics. The vendor market is now standardising around metrics with names like brand mindshare, brand consideration and brand engagement; a set of these was launched for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity at the end of September 2026. You do not need to buy a tool to start. A monthly manual check across three platforms, recorded in a spreadsheet, tells a Singapore SME most of what it needs to know.

This article explains what each metric actually measures, how to run the check yourself, and how to tell a real AI visibility report from an expensive dashboard.

Why Your Existing Reports Cannot Tell You This

Here is a Singapore customer journey that happens every day now:

Someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation. Your name appears. They think about it overnight, search your company name in Google the next morning, click through, glance at your reviews, and enquire via WhatsApp a week later.

Your analytics will file that customer under "direct traffic" or a branded Google search. The AI recommendation that started the whole thing leaves no trace in any report you currently have.

This is why "our traffic is flat so nothing is happening" is now a false conclusion, and why "our traffic dropped so our marketing broke" often is too. With AI Overviews reaching around 2.5 billion monthly users and Google's AI Mode over 1 billion, a meaningful share of your market is getting answers without clicking anything.

And in Singapore specifically: 45% of consumers have used AI to find local businesses, up from 6%, with AI platforms now the third most popular source of local business recommendations.

The Four Things Worth Measuring

Strip away vendor branding and there are four distinct questions. Each needs its own measurement.

1. Share of mentions — are you in the conversation at all?

Ask the questions your customers ask, across several platforms, and count how often your brand appears at all versus how often each competitor does.

This is the foundational metric. If you are mentioned in 1 of 10 relevant answers and a competitor is in 8, nothing else matters yet.

Vendors often call this brand mindshare or share of voice.

2. How you are positioned — mentioned, or recommended?

There is a large difference between "Options include A, B and C" and "For this situation, B is usually the better fit because…". Both count as a mention. Only one wins the customer.

Read the actual wording. Are you presented as a genuine recommendation, a generic alternative, or a cautionary contrast? This is the metric vendors package as brand consideration, and it is the one that correlates most closely with enquiries.

3. Citations — does the answer link to you?

Does the answer cite your website, or does it cite a directory, a competitor's blog, or a review site talking about you?

Citations are the only part of AI visibility that can send you traffic directly. They are also the most volatile: citation sets change roughly 50% month to month, and only about 11% of citations overlap between platforms. One good month is not a position.

4. Accuracy — is what AI says about you correct?

The most overlooked metric, and often the most urgent. AI answers routinely carry outdated prices, closed locations, wrong opening hours, services you no longer offer, or confusion with a similarly named company.

Check this first. A confidently wrong answer costs you customers faster than absence does, and it is usually fixable — it is generally coming from stale information on your own site, your Google Business Profile, or a directory listing you forgot existed.

How to Run the Check Yourself, in 30 Minutes a Month

No tool required. This is the method we use before recommending anyone buy software.

Step 1: Write 10 questions your customers actually ask. Not your brand name — the problem. For a Singapore aesthetics clinic, that would be things like "best skin clinic in Singapore for acne scars", "how much does a chemical peel cost in Singapore", "is Rejuran worth it". Keep the list fixed so months are comparable.

Step 2: Ask all 10 in three platforms — ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity. Use a fresh chat each time, with no memory of your earlier questions.

Step 3: Record four columns per question: did you appear (yes/no), who else appeared, how you were described, and whether your site was cited.

Step 4: Repeat on the same date each month. The trend is the entire point. A single snapshot is noise.

That spreadsheet is what a citation log is. If an agency is doing AI search work for you and cannot produce one after 90 days, you are paying for traditional SEO with new vocabulary.

When a Paid Tool Is Worth It

Manual checking is honest and free, but it does not scale. Buying a tool starts making sense when:

  • You need to track more than about 30 queries regularly
  • You are running this across multiple markets or languages — a Singapore business serving both English and Chinese-speaking buyers effectively has two separate visibility problems
  • You need historical trend data for board or investor reporting
  • You want automated alerts when AI starts saying something inaccurate about you

Two cautions before you sign anything. First, no tool has privileged access — Google has stated outright that third-party tools "don't have access to our internal ranking data. They can't guarantee performance." Any vendor implying otherwise is overselling. Second, the metric names are vendor branding, not industry standards. Ask exactly what is being counted and how the questions are chosen; a dashboard measuring 200 queries nobody asks is worse than 10 real ones in a spreadsheet.

What Actually Moves These Numbers

Measurement is only useful if you know which levers respond. In rough order of impact for a Singapore SME:

Be readable. Confirm your site does not block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended. Check yourdomain.com/robots.txt. Sites built before 2023 frequently block all of them, and no other effort matters while that is true.

Be specific. Publish real figures, real prices, dated facts and named sources. Princeton and Georgia Tech research found cited statistics can increase AI citation rates by up to 40%.

Be talked about elsewhere. For brand evaluation questions, 57% of AI citations come from reviews and social proof. Google reviews and third-party mentions carry more weight here than your own homepage.

Be present on the platforms AI reads. Across 1.4 million citations from six AI platforms, LinkedIn was the most-cited domain for B2B. And Ahrefs' analysis of roughly 75,000 brands found YouTube mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.737 — among the highest of any measurable factor.

Be patient about the mechanics. Google's May 2026 guidance named six unnecessary tactics: llms.txt-style AI files, content chunking, AI-specific content rewriting, AI-specific schema markup and related practices — and warned against manufactured brand mentions and "approved by Google" claims. Its position: "Optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."

Keep It in Proportion

One number to hold alongside all of this: traditional search still sends roughly 34 times more traffic than AI chatbots. AI visibility is growing fast and worth measuring properly. It is not yet a reason to defund the channels paying your bills.

The right posture for a Singapore SME in late 2026: measure AI visibility monthly, fix what is broken or inaccurate, keep search fundamentals funded, and revisit the budget split quarterly rather than on the strength of a headline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How often should I check my AI visibility?
Monthly, on a fixed date, with a fixed question list. Weekly is noise — citation sets shift constantly. Quarterly is too slow to catch an inaccurate answer that is actively costing you customers.

Q2: What is a good result?
There is no benchmark, because the metrics are vendor-defined and category-dependent. Judge against two things only: your own previous month, and the competitors appearing alongside you. Appearing in 3 of 10 relevant answers when your main competitor appears in 2 is a strong position, regardless of what any dashboard scores it.

Q3: AI is saying something wrong about my business. How do I fix it?
Start with your own sources: update your website, your Google Business Profile, and any directory listings carrying the outdated information — these are usually where it came from. Corrections propagate over weeks, not hours, so check again after 4–6 weeks rather than the next day.

Q4: Do I need a separate agency for AI visibility?
No, and separating it is usually counterproductive. The work that improves AI visibility — good content, accurate information, reviews, credible third-party presence — is the same work that improves search. Anyone selling AI visibility as a standalone service disconnected from your SEO should be asked what exactly they are doing differently.

Q5: How long until improvements show up?
The realistic observation window is 90 days, with meaningful movement typically over 3–6 months. Crawler blocking is the exception — unblocking can show results in weeks because it removes an absolute barrier rather than improving a relative position.
